I Want My Own Karaoke Equipment, What do I Need to Buy?
Nov 22nd, 2011 Jeff Hardcastle
If you have decided that you want to enjoy karaoke from your home or that you want to start a side job as a karaoke DJ, you will need your own karaoke equipment. Depending on the application, there will be an investment to get good quality equipment and a few things that you will only need if you plan on taking your show on the road.
Karaoke player
The first thing you will need is some sort of karaoke player. Whether it is a home unit, portable unit or simply software on a computer, you will have to decide which avenue you want to get your karaoke music. Each option has its advantages. The cost for home and portable units are relatively low now days, being purpose built to deliver a good karaoke experience. Getting music, especially if you need a significant collection, can cost more since you need actual disks of music.
Going with software on one's computer seems like a good idea until you take into consideration the cost of the software as well as hardware that will need to be added to most computers to make it work. Karaoke on a laptop is doable but the most costly and unreliable method. Most karaoke DJ's that use computers use desktop systems that they simply carry around with them. This gives them reliable, hard-ware based sound cards and video output cards, rather than using USB powered cards to the same effect.
Microphones and accessories
One of the most overlooked pieces of karaoke equipment is purchasing good quality microphones. Whether you intend to never leave your home or intend to never use your karaoke setup at home, good microphones make a huge difference on a number of fronts. Investing in good quality means you will never be left hanging without a microphone. Better microphones are designed to be able to cope with being dropped repeatedly which will happen regardless of being at home or entertaining a large group. Buying good microphones may take you to a store that specializes in sound. Most stores that sell guitar equipment also sell microphones designed for live sound.
While there, you should invest in good quality cables and a couple microphone stands as well. Cables do wear out and the prepared karaoke DJ will have at least one or two extra cables with them at all times.
Make the Music heard
Finally, you have to make sure that your setup is heard. If you are using your karaoke machine at home, you can simply plug your machine or computer into your home surround sound receiver and have good sound. If you have good quality main speakers, then you will want to probably turn off the surround processing to maximize the sound through the better quality speakers.
For the up and coming karaoke DJ, you will want to invest in some type of karaoke amplifier or what is called a PA, or public address, system. These range from 2 speakers and a small amplifier up to as large as you can imagine; though a full PA that would power a stadium may be overkill for Karaoke.About the Author:
